The direct answer

Test the signing guarantor's actually available resources after ownership restrictions, pledges, timing and competing commitments; a high net-worth figure alone does not establish cash support when it is needed.

Test money that can be used, not just assets that can be listed

An aircraft guarantor liquidity stress test reconciles a proposed guarantor's assets to cash that could actually be available when the aircraft borrower needs support. It separates ownership, restrictions, valuation, timing and competing obligations. A large net-worth statement can coexist with a small amount of usable liquidity, particularly when wealth is concentrated in an operating business, real estate or pledged investments. The test is a planning tool; it does not determine legal liability or substitute for a lender's credit decision.

This guide applies to discussions involving an individual, corporate or investment-holding-company guarantee. Those are different parties with different assets and obligations. Do not combine them into one household-style number without identifying legal ownership and any permissible transfer. Start with the actual proposed guarantee and the borrower's needs. A stress case is useful only if it reflects who might have to provide funds, what could trigger the need and how quickly support would be required.

Identify the guarantor and the requested support

Ask counsel to explain the guarantee's scope, any limit, duration, conditions and release mechanism. The planning worksheet should identify which obligations are being supported and which person or entity is signing. A company's access to a shareholder's wealth is not established merely because the shareholder owns the company. Likewise, a personal guarantee does not mean every asset on a jointly prepared statement can be transferred at will. Ownership and authority need to be reconciled before assigning availability.

The OCC's current lending handbook considers guarantor resources and support within underwriting and ongoing credit review. It does not establish a minimum guarantor liquidity ratio for every aircraft loan. OCC June 2026: lending and loan portfolio risk management

Define the support scenario in practical terms. It might be a temporary operating shortfall, a required principal reduction, a maintenance bill or a balloon amount that cannot be refinanced as expected. Avoid a generic statement that the guarantor is strong. State the amount, date, duration and assumptions of the potential demand so the liquidity analysis has a task to answer.

Classify assets before applying a percentage

Use separate categories for immediately accessible cash, investments with an identifiable sale and settlement path, restricted or pledged funds, business interests, real estate and contingent receipts. Record the owner and source document for each asset. Avoid counting the same interest twice through a holding company and its owner's personal statement. A business valuation can inform net worth without being cash the guarantor can produce on a short deadline.

For each liquid investment, identify why the proposed amount is realizable. Consider ownership restrictions, concentration, settlement, transaction costs and potential tax obligations with qualified advisers. Do not use one uniform haircut to imply an accurate liquidation value. The appropriate adjustment depends on the asset and the purpose of the exercise. Mark assumptions explicitly, use more than one case and keep the unadjusted value visible so another reviewer can see how the planning figure was reached.

Reconcile pledges and account restrictions

A brokerage or bank statement does not, by itself, prove that all assets shown are available to support another obligation. Identify liens, control arrangements, withdrawal conditions and existing draws. FINRA warns that securities-backed credit can involve collateral calls and forced sales. A pledged portfolio can therefore create a cash demand at the same time its market value falls. FINRA: securities-backed credit risks and collateral calls

As one specific state-law illustration, Washington's enacted UCC describes methods of controlling a deposit account and notes that control can coexist with a debtor's retained direction rights. The existence of online withdrawal access is therefore not a complete legal analysis of an account's status. This is a Washington example, not a conclusion that its law governs your account or guarantee. Have counsel and the account institution identify the actual restrictions and availability. Washington RCW 62A.9A-104: deposit-account control

Do not deduct an entire investment account merely because one part is pledged without checking the actual arrangement. Equally, do not count the full account while subtracting only the drawn balance if additional collateral is restricted. Record the methodology and supporting confirmation. The worksheet should reveal the uncertainty rather than hide it inside an unexplained net number.

Build a hypothetical available-liquidity bridge

Assume a guarantor lists $12 million of assets: $1.2 million cash, $2.8 million marketable securities, a $5 million business interest and $3 million real estate. With $3 million of total liabilities, headline net worth is $9 million. For this short-horizon example, assign no readily available proceeds to the business and real estate. Assume $800,000 of the securities is unavailable because of a confirmed restriction. That leaves $2 million of securities to evaluate for possible liquidation.

Use a deliberately assumed 10% realization allowance on that unrestricted securities portion. The adjusted amount is $1.8 million, which plus $1.2 million cash produces $3 million of baseline available liquidity before commitments. Assume $300,000 for taxes, $600,000 for a committed business injection, $200,000 of other near-term obligations and $700,000 for the proposed aircraft cash contribution. Those commitments total $1.8 million, leaving $1.2 million in the baseline planning case. These figures are not an appropriate reserve recommendation or a lender policy.

Illustrative guarantor bridge; ownership, restrictions and all adjustments are assumptions
StepBaseline planning amount
Headline net worth$9,000,000
Cash$1,200,000
Unrestricted securities after assumed 10% allowance$1,800,000
Available liquidity before commitments$3,000,000
Identified near-term commitments$1,800,000
Baseline remaining liquidity$1,200,000

Stress correlated demands, not isolated numbers

Apply an illustrative 30% market decline to the $2 million unrestricted securities portion before the same 10% realization allowance. The result is $1.26 million: $2 million multiplied by 70% and then by 90%. With the unchanged $1.2 million cash and $1.8 million commitments, remaining liquidity falls to $660,000. Add a separate hypothetical $350,000 aircraft support need and only $310,000 remains in this constructed case. The purpose is to expose the difference between headline wealth and short-term capacity, not to forecast a market loss.

Ask whether the market decline could also reduce business distributions, increase a securities-backed facility's demand or delay a property sale. A scenario that assumes all other sources remain perfect may understate the combined strain. Do not merely add unrelated worst cases with no explanation, either. Describe why the selected stresses might occur together and which commitments are fixed, discretionary or already funded. A useful test can be severe while remaining transparent about its assumptions.

Put timing alongside each funding source

A guarantor may be solvent but unable to produce funds by the required date. Add columns showing the earliest realistic availability, necessary approvals and supporting evidence. Investment proceeds expected next month do not solve a support need next week. A contractual distribution restriction or required consent can matter more than the anticipated amount. The right question is whether the source is usable at the time of the modeled demand.

Use a daily or weekly schedule for a near-term closing issue and a monthly schedule for a longer ownership stress case. Keep amounts already spent separate from future commitments. A paid aircraft deposit reduces current cash but should not also be deducted as an unpaid obligation. Likewise, a receivable included in a business's value should not be counted again as personal cash without a supported distribution path. Reconciliation errors can make a statement look strong while adding no real capacity.

Keep a separate list of contingent obligations, including other guarantees, rather than deducting an arbitrary percentage from every asset. Describe the event that could turn each obligation into a cash need and the relationship to the aircraft stress case. If a business downturn might both reduce distributions and create a support request under another guarantee, show that connection explicitly. The exercise is not a legal conclusion about when liability arises. It is a way to avoid counting the same apparent financial strength as unrestricted support for several simultaneous commitments.

Define response actions without assuming they are available

For each scenario, list the actual actions the guarantor could consider: retain more cash before purchase, reduce the aircraft contribution by changing the transaction, postpone a distribution, sell an unrestricted investment or discuss a different financing structure. Each action has consequences and may require other approvals. A plan to take another loan is not funded support until its terms and availability are established. A plan to sell an operating business is not an immediate liquidity reserve.

Document the order in which actions would be evaluated and the point at which an aircraft purchase or expansion should be reconsidered. Avoid promising the lender a transfer that the proposed guarantor has not authorized. For an entity guarantor, have the appropriate corporate and legal advisers review authority and consequences. This article does not determine solvency, enforceability, fiduciary duties or tax treatment; it organizes the information needed for those professional decisions.

Keep the statement current and the evidence private

Date the asset list, liability list and stress assumptions. Reconcile them to current statements and identify material changes since the last underwriting package. A large distribution, new pledge, additional guarantee or business acquisition can change the result without changing the aircraft loan payment. Assign responsibility for refreshing the analysis at agreed review points and whenever a material event occurs. Do not silently carry forward an old value because the supporting account is difficult to obtain.

Provide sensitive financial records through an appropriate agreed channel. The public financing inquiry can begin a discussion, but it is not the place to publish account numbers, tax returns or private ownership details. Frequently asked questions

Is net worth enough to establish guarantor strength?

No. Net worth and usable liquidity answer different questions. Identify ownership, encumbrances, timing, competing obligations and potential demands. A business or property interest can contribute to wealth without producing cash within the period in which the aircraft borrower may need support. The lender decides what evidence and structure it will accept.

Can I count a pledged investment account as available cash?

Do not assume the full balance is freely available. Review the account's actual restrictions, outstanding borrowing and collateral requirements. A market decline may reduce borrowing capacity or create another cash demand. Determine the supported amount and timing rather than treating the displayed account value as an unrestricted bank balance.

Does a holding-company guarantee include its owner's personal assets?

Do not infer that result. Identify the actual guarantor, executed obligations, asset ownership and any separate personal undertaking. An entity and its owner are different parties. Counsel should explain the guarantee's legal scope while the liquidity worksheet shows which assets belong to the signing party and which transfers require additional action.

How often should a guarantor stress test be updated?

Follow any actual reporting obligations and refresh the planning analysis when material circumstances change. New pledges, distributions, liabilities, acquisitions or a changed aircraft purchase can invalidate earlier assumptions. Keep the review date and source evidence visible so the next decision maker can distinguish a current calculation from a historical underwriting snapshot.
